These pistols were manufactured with a thumb safety and integral lanyard loop not typicaly found on this model. Serial number S181299 confirms that this exact SIG Sauer P230 belongs to the famous 1997 US commercial batch. SIG Sauer produced this specific block of serial numbers (falling in the S181xxx range) to fulfill the final phases of the Japanese National Police Agency contract. When the contract concluded, the manufacturing overrun pistols were redirected to the US market and imported by SIGARMS Inc. in 1997. Because it was a factory overrun rather than a surplus police trade-in, pistols in this specific S181xxx serial block did not see active duty while in Japan. They entered the US consumer market brand new.
